Phase 3: Proposal of an action plan.
What
would you like to do since now to improve your pedagogical practices and get
your learners in love with the English language? (think of a little, but
meaningful action).
I would
like to increase the motivation and interest of the students
in the class. Hence, I want to spend five or ten minutes of each class doing a
short activity, that allows the learners to feel more engaged with the class in
a funny way.
Some ideas
that I have in mind are:
-
Read a
fragment of a poem or a fable, or a quote or an infographic, and then invite
the students to express their personal opinions about it.
-
Play a
short game in the middle or at the end of the class.
-
Post
jokes or riddles and students will explain them.
-
Show
images and find the difference
-
Share
online resources such as Ted Talks or a short video that the learners find
interesting to talk about.
What’s the step by step of your proposal?
Each day I am going to start
the class doing a specific activity that motivates and prepares the students
for the lesson. The idea is not only to get the attention of students in a joyful
way but also to reinforce their skills in a foreign language.
• What purposes do you want to
reach with your proposal?
My first purpose is to engage the teenage
students with the class moving them away from all the distracting elements they
have at home (mobile, internet, parents, pets, and so on). The second purpose
is to motive and challenge teenage students in their learning process. I want to add the novelty element: “aspects of an activity that are new
or different or totally unexpected” (Richards, 2013,
p.12). I want the learners to feel that each class will experience something
different and unexpected.
•
Who are your students? What do you know about their families, their
socioeconomic context, their likes and dislikes, and their learning styles?
At this moment, I am
working at a private school named Colegio Antonio Nariño as an English teacher.
I am in charge of level B1 that is formed by teenage students of 10th
and 11th grade. The learners need to develop their abilities to communicate confidently in
English for a wide range of situations, such as travel, study, work, and social
interactions.
About their families,
most of them belong to socioeconomic stratum 4 and 5. The place of origin of the
families is the Casanare department, followed by the Boyacá department. 100% of
the educational population lives in the urban area of Yopal city.
The economic activities, which the parents do, are activities of the
private and independent, sector, specific work in an oil company or have their
own business. The academic training of most parents is among undergraduate to
masters, therefore, the level of income ranges from 6 S.M.L.V to 12 S.M.L.V.
The high income that families have allows them to guarantee adequate food,
timely health service, and access to public services such as sewerage, water,
energy, home gas, internet, and cable TV.
Most of these families live in a one-to-three-floors house, others live
in apartments, and the houses belong to them in almost all cases. The average
of inhabitants per house is 4 people, which shows that there is no type of
overcrowding, living in comfort and there is total privacy.
The marital status observed is free union, married, separated. It should
note that in many cases there are marital unions made up of a second union,
giving themselves what are known as reconstituted families.
The types of transport the educational community uses a particular car
(97%), motorcycle (3%). The most used
types of communication are cell phones, computers, television, radio, internet,
and newspaper.
Currently, as a result of the
pandemic situation the students like watching series and films on Netflix, chat
with their friends, play computer video games and share time with their
families, a few of them love reading novels and singing songs. They hate tasks
that demanding more time in front of a screen because their academic agenda is
from Monday to Friday, from 7:00 a.m. – 12. 00 m. and 2: 00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Well, about their learning style of
the students I just only know that they love images and interact with computers.
Most of them don´t like to read a lot.
• How would your proposal turn
English classes into enjoyable life experiences for your students?
Having in mind that classes are in a virtual environment I will integrate more technology to get better academic
results. Hence, my proposal will turn English classes more enjoyable because
the activities will be original, and interesting, increasing the engagement of
the learners.
Which resources will you need for
implementing your proposal?
The internet is the principal source that I need to implement my
proposal. The second source that I will use is an e-book.
Propose an action plan for
implementing your proposal from now and at least during the next two months

The way of systematizing my experience will be a field diary, so I can reflect on my actions constantly to make decisions to improve the process.

The following chart gives account of my performance along my pedagogical experience
as a teacher in online environments. The idea is to reflect on the action
plan that I am going to implement during (1) one month regardless of the
strengths, weaknesses, aspects to improve, feelings, observations, comments,
etc.
